Protecting Schools Through Professional-Grade Security Solutions
The Heartland School Safety Association (HSSA) provides comprehensive, real-world security support to K–12 schools at no cost or low cost, depending on service type.
Our programs are designed to help schools identify vulnerabilities, strengthen deterrence, and develop visible preparedness while maintaining a welcoming environment.
We combine federal-level security expertise with community partnership to deliver practical, sustainable safety improvements.
School Security Assessments

Objective: Identify vulnerabilities, prioritize improvements, and strengthen deterrence.
HSSA provides on-site safety assessments for all K–12 schools in Nebraska and Iowa at no cost. Each assessment includes a walkthrough of facilities, evaluation of daily operations, and review of policies and procedures.
Our assessment model draws from CISA, PASS K–12, and Department of Education safety standards, adapted to fit real-world school environments.
Assessment Areas Include:
-
Access control and visitor management
-
Building security, locks, and entry systems
-
Surveillance coverage and monitoring
-
Church and multipurpose facility coordination (for parochial schools)
-
Emergency and lockdown procedures
-
Communications and coordination with local law enforcement
-
Deterrence posture and visual readiness
Deliverables:
-
A written report with observations, vulnerabilities, and cost-ranked recommendations
-
A prioritized action plan with short-term and long-term improvements
-
Referrals to vetted local vendors for equipment or technical solutions
Deterrence and Preparedness Training

We help schools design cost-effective, layered security systems that integrate physical and digital controls.
HSSA remains vendor-neutral but partners with trusted local companies who offer discounted pricing to HSSA-member schools.

Parents and community members are essential partners in school safety. HSSA conducts presentations and briefings designed to educate and empower families without causing unnecessary fear.
Topics Include:
-
Understanding modern school security
-
The role of deterrence and preparedness
-
How parents can support safety policies
-
What to expect during drills or incidents
-
Communication and reunification planning
Police Services Coordination

Objective: Strengthen partnerships between schools and law enforcement to enhance response, deterrence, and daily safety operations.
HSSA works directly with local police departments, sheriff’s offices, and school resource units to build consistent, cooperative security practices.
We help bridge communication gaps between schools and law enforcement agencies so that both sides operate from a shared understanding of the school’s environment, layout, and risk profile.
Key Coordination Activities:
-
Joint Safety Planning: Facilitating introductions, contact directories, and shared communication protocols between schools and local police or deputies.
-
Emergency Response Mapping: Providing law enforcement with detailed campus layouts and security notes (entry points, camera zones, alarm locations, and access systems).
-
Patrol Coordination: Assisting schools and agencies in developing part-time, event-based, or rotating patrol arrangements, including during Mass, arrival/dismissal, or special events.
-
Tabletop Exercises: Conducting joint staff–law enforcement drills focused on lockdowns, evacuations, and incident command integration.
-
Incident Communication Procedures: Establishing clear guidance for how and when to notify law enforcement of suspicious activity, threats, or security breaches.
-
Why It Matters:
Strong police partnerships increase deterrence and shorten emergency response time.
When officers know the facility layout, staff roles, and communication points, the school moves from being a “response site” to being an active part of the local security network.
